As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” — Joshua 24:15
Christmas did not begin with lights, gifts, or traditions — it began with a man who obeyed God when it was inconvenient, confusing, and costly.
Joseph never spoke a recorded word in Scripture, yet his leadership shaped the environment where Jesus grew. He listened. He obeyed. He protected. He provided. He moved his family when God said move. He stayed when God said stay.
That is biblical manhood.
Men often misunderstand spiritual leadership. They assume it means having all the answers, being the most knowledgeable, or leading formal devotions every night. In reality, spiritual leadership starts with direction, not perfection.
Joseph didn’t understand everything God was doing — but he trusted the One who was doing it.
In the same way, Advent invites men to realign their homes around Christ. It asks hard questions:
- Who or what sets the schedule in your home?
- What shapes the attitudes in your house?
- What do your children learn about God by watching you?
Your family doesn’t need a perfect father or husband. They need a present, humble, and Christ-centered leader. Men lead whether they realize it or not — the only question is where they are leading.
Reflection Questions
- Who is really setting the spiritual direction in your home right now?
- If your family followed your example, where would they be spiritually?
- What is one simple way you can lead your family toward Christ this Christmas?
- Where is fear or passivity keeping you from stepping up?
Action Steps
- Personal: Commit to praying daily for your family by name this week.
- Family: Read the Christmas story (Luke 2) together and pray before bed one night.
- Relational: Ask your wife or children how you can lead them spiritually — and listen.
Prayer
Lord, You entrusted families to men not because we are perfect, but because You are faithful.
Give me the courage to lead, the humility to follow You, and the faith to trust You with my home.
This Christmas, help me lead my family to the manger — and keep them there. Amen.
